What’s the difference between Tri-Wyes and 4 into 1 Headers?

Well it’s really quite simple, it’s all in the collector, really.

A 4 into 1 collector does just that, it merges the four exhaust headers from each cylinder into one exhaust pipe, all at the same point of connection. See the diagram n the left, of course that’s only one side of the car. For certain applications, this design produces more horsepower/torque than the TriWye.

On a Tri-Wye (TRI Y), there’s a series of three merge collectors that merge 2 header pipes into one. See the diagram n the left, of course that’s only one side of the car. For certain applications, this design produces more horsepower than the 4 into 1.

Ever wonder how the "right" kind of headers make more horsepower?

Well it takes energy to push exhaust gases out the exhaust pipe. Headers don’t really make horsepower, they just make it easier for the engine to get rid of the exhaust. Properly designed headers frees up the energy previously wasted pushing out exhaust, and allows it to be used in moving the racecar.

So why TriWyes?

Well the advantage if a tri-wye design is that it balances the exhaust gas (as close as possible)coming from paired clyinders that fire 180 degrees apart. The high-pressure pulses from each paired set of tubes is allowed one complete crankshaft evolution’s worth of time to smooth out before its partner cylinder is fired. The pulses would be “matched” so they could proceed out the tailpipe in an orderly fashion. So as best as possible we make pairs of 1 & 5, 3 & 7, 2 & 4, and 6 & 8 together.

So why use 4 into 1?

Well Tri-Wyes have disadvantages too. First off the're more expensive. Second, they fall short in Horsepower for certain applications, like Torque.

How do you decide?

Best advice is call us, tell us your application and we'll tell you all we know. If that's not enough? There's header manufacturers we deal with that can get into deep details for your specific application.

What's a FireCone?

Well inside the collector (only on 4 into 1)there's a center point where all four pipes come together. A pyramid piece of metal is fabricated penetrating into the exhaust outlet from the four pipes.
